Greece Says Turkish Fighter Jets Violated Its Airspace

Turkish fighter planes have violated the airspace of Greece, the General Staff of the Greek Air Forces claims in a statement cited by RIA Novosti.

According to the announcement, 16 Turkish fighter jets entered Greece’s airspace on January 6, 2010, four of them armed. They were met by Greek fighters that escorted them back to the Turkish airspace.

The Greek General Staff says the Turkish Air Forces have violated an informal 20-year-old “holiday agreement” under which the two sides do not bother one another during religious and other holidays.

Yet, according to the Greek side, the Turkish Air Forces violated the gentlemen’s agreement on December 25, 2009, Christmas Day, and then again on Epiphany.
